At The Hudson Independent, where we see our responsibility as reporting full local news coverage truthfully and accurately, without bias, our coverage will focus on things like waterfront and neighborhood development and environmental issues, local business activities and business profiles, local politics and relevant town and county news.

The Hudson Independent: Overview

The Hudson Independent is a monthly community newspaper serving Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington, NY. Our inaugural print edition was published February, 2006.

The Hudson Independent Launches Publication in February

New monthly newspaper will serve Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow

Free community news source will reach 25,000 readers each month through the mail

(Tarrytown, NY, January 9, 2006) -- The Hudson Independent, a free monthly newspaper designed to serve the communities of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, New York, will publish its first issue early in February 2006, it was announced today by Robert Kimmel, chair of the paper’s editorial board.

The new newspaper will arrive monthly in the mailboxes of approximately 11,000 homes in the two villages, reaching more than 25,000 readers.

According to the publication’s mission statement, The Hudson Independent’s goal is,  “to report local news and information truthfully and accurately, without bias, in an effort to help readers make decisions on important issues that affect their daily lives.”

NY Times Covers Our Launch

Even before it's been published, The Hudson Independent has drawn the attentions of The New York Times. The paper's David Scharfenberg wrote about our venture in the Jan. 8, 2006, Westchester edition, and his half-page story, with photo, quotes editor Marcy Gray, as well President Robert Kimmel. Scharfenberg reports that while our paper's accommodations on Main Street are a bit cramped, our "ambitions take up a bit more space." And he notes that the paper's staff "hope to reinvigorate civic life" in the community. Gray is quoted as saying "We're looking to be a serious community newspaper. ... What Our Columnists Will Cover

We have some true local talent here in Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow-Irvington, and we'll be bringing you great guest writers in each print issue and online. We'll have an inaugural contribution from Ben Cheever (pictured right), author of several novels, the memoir Selling Ben Cheever (read an excerpt) and a collection of letters by his father, novelist John Cheever.

We'll also have regular columns on food, culture, history and film.

President/Editorial Advisory Board Chair Robert Kimmel

Robert Kimmel is the chair of our editorial board. His experience as a journalist over a span of four decades has ranged from sports editor of a suburban Philadelphia daily newspaper to Director of Network Radio News, NBC.

As a correspondent for the American Forces Network, he reported from Paris and Frankfurt. His work at a CBS station, and for ABC News included posts as a writer, reporter, editor and producer of radio and television programs. He retired more recently from a company he helped establish that provided radio and TV news feature reports to stations nationally.

His experience also included several years as a vice president of Hill and Knowlton, an international public relations company. Mr. Kimmel is president of the Hudson Valley News Corporation.

Vice President/Editorial Advisory Board Member Morey Storck

Morey Storck is The Hudson Independent's vice president for production and corporate affairs. Formerly, he owned Signature Advertising, a company that engaged in trade and retail advertising, including layout and design, logo and packaging design, and photography. He oversaw catalog design and printing, trade shows and sales meetings, fashion shows and public relations for clients.

Storck is currently editor of a newsletter for the Edgemont Condominiums, in Tarrytown. He also is vice president of the Hudson Valley News Corporation.

Secretary, Treasurer & Business Manager Sunil Verma

Sunil Verma is a  corporate strategist for a major retailer who has managed a  consulting firm, providing financial and technical solutions to New  York based businesses and government agencies. He has a doctorate in  economics and has taught at SUNY and other New York area universities.
